Na altura do Natal, no blog cuci cuci coo-eng, vi uma ideia de DIY para crianças, para fazer umas prendas de Natal. Como podem ver no post, o que de lá resultou foram uns marcadores de livros bordados. Eu, que nunca tinha pensado em usar bordados para fazer marcadores, fiquei logo com vontade de fazer uma versão minha.

Around Christmas, I saw an idea of a DIY project for kids on the blog cuci cuci coo-eng to make Christmas presents. As you can see in the post, what came out of there were some embroidered bookmarks. I had never thought about using embroidering on bookmarks, so I immediatelly wanted to make a version of my own.

Em vez de fazer um desenho, usei o ponto cruz. Fiz logo dois marcadores para oferecer no Natal e fiquei com a ideia de fazer outro para mim, um dia...

Instead of drawing somthing, I used the cross.stitch. I made two bookmarks to give away as Christmas gifts, and had the idea of making one for my own, one day...

Ora bem, o dia foi ontem :P É muito fácil de fazer e agora já não tenho desculpa para dobrar os cantos das páginas dos livros!

Well, that day was yesterday :P It's very easy to make one and now I don't have any excuse to fold the corners of the pages of my books!

Primeiro peguei num bocado rectangular de tela para bordar e bordei o meu desenho, com o cuidado de ficar centrado.

First, I grabed a rectangular piece of cross stitch fabric and I embroidered a design, making sure it was centered.

Depois peguei num rectângulo de tecido, que sobrepus à tela (o bordado e o lado direito ficam virados para dentro).

Then, I grabbed a rectangular piece of white fabric, that I put on the wrongside of the embroidery (the embroidered part and the rightside of the fabric were facing inwards)

Na parte de cima do rectângulo, entalei uma pequena trança que fiz com as mesmas linhas que usei no bordado. Este penduricalho vai servir para ficar a "espreitar" por entre as páginas do livro, da maneira a saber que é ali onde tenho de continuar a leitura. 

On the top part of the bookmark, I tucked in a little braid I made with the same threads I used for the embroidery. This braid will be "peeking out" of the book pages and show me were I stopped my reading.

Cosi a quase toda a volta, tomando especial atenção na zona da trança, para ter a certeza de que ela não saía.

I sewed all around it, taking special attention to the part were de braid was tucked in, making sure it wouldn't fall out. 

Deixei apenas a parte de baixo por coser. Por esse buraco, virei o marcador do direito e enfiei um bocado de cartão do mesmo tamanho (mais uma vez tive a "ajuda" de uma caixa de cereais), para dar estabilidade.

Finalmente, cosi a parte de baixo.

I only left the bootom part unsewn. Through that hole I turned everything rightside out and then shoved a piece of thin cardboard (once again I had some "help" of a cereal box), to give it some stability.

Finaly I sewed the hole close.

Agora é só escolher um livro para estrear o meu marcador :P

Now, I only have to choose a book to use my bookmark :P

Porta-lenços // Hanky-carrier

Já desde o Verão que tinha decidido trocar guardanapos e lenços de papel por guardanapos e lenços de pano, mas sobre isso farei um post outro dia.

In the Summer, I decided to only use cloth napkins and handkerchiefs, instead of paper napkins and tissues, but I'll do a post about that some other day.

No entanto, só há poucos dias é que me deparei com a necessidade de andar com lenços de pano a tempo inteiro - começou a época das gripes e eu comecei a ter uma fonte constantemente a correr no meio da cara :S Apesar das inúmeras vantagens que os lenços de pano têm, os de papel tem um enorme pró : uma prática embalagem, com que se pode andar para todo o lado. É verdade que não dá jeito (e mete-me um bocado de nojo) andar com o lenço de pano enrolado no bolso das calças ou perdido na carteira (imaginem-se a tentar tirar à pressa a carteira para pagar o bilhete de autocarro e de repente sentem uma humidade na mão.... pois.... nojice.....), de modo que me estava a deparar com o problema de como transportar o meu lencinho.

However, it was not until a few days ago, when flew season began and my nose turned into a constantly running fountain, that I truly realised what carrying around handkerchiefs was really about. Although they have many advantages, paper tissues do beat them in one point : those practical packages, that you can run around with in your purse. It's really annoying (and gross) to have a curled up hanky in your pocket or laying around in your purse (imagine trying to fish out the wallet to pay for the bus ticket and your hand touching something moist... yeah... icky...), so I was face to face with a handkerchief-transportation problem.

Foi assim que surgiu o porta lenços - uma carteirinha para poder transportar os meus lenços para todo o lado :)

That was when I thought about this handkerchief-carrier - a little wallet to transport my handkerchiefs everywhere I go :)

Cortei dois rectângulos de tecido. Um bonito (de um top dos tempos em que gostava de andar com a barriga à mostra) e um branco, simples, para fazer de forro. Não medi os rectângulo (preguiça), fiz a olho, mas suficientemente grande para lá caberem os meus lencinhos.

I cut 2 rectangles of two different fabrics. A pretty one ( an old top from the time I liked to show off my belly) and a plain white one to use as lining. I didn't measure them (lazy me), I did it by eye, making sure that it would end up big enough for my hankys to fit.

 

Pus as partes exteriores dos tecidos uma contra a outra e cosi a toda a volta. Só deixei um espaço para virar para o direito (obrigada pela ajuda na gíria da costura, Papgena :)) e depois fechei a abertura com uns pontos.

I put the two rightsides facing eachother and I sewed all around, leaving only enough space to turn the whole thing rightside out. I then sewed that hole close.

De seguida dobrei esse rectângulo, de forma a que o tecido das pintas ficasse virado para dentro. Não dobrei exactamente ao meio pois queria fazer o efeito envelope, portanto um dos lados ficou mais comprido. Cosi pelas linhas vermelhas da imagem.

Next, I folded the rectangle, making sure that the dotted fabric was facing inwards. I didn't fold it in the middle, because I wanted to have a little flap, so one side was longer than the other. I sewed were the red lines are showing in the picture.

Depois de já ter cosido de um dos lados deparei-me com um dilema existencial que quase me fez desistir do projecto : como impedir que um lenço húmido "contaminasse" um lenço limpo? Pois, é que a minha fonte é de tal forma potente que necessita de mais do que um para ser contida, portanto a carterinha tem de levar sempre, no mínimo, 2 lenços.

After having sewn one of the sides, I faced yet another dilemma, that almost made me throw in the towell : how could I stop a wet handkerchief to "contaminate" a clean one? Yes, because when my fountain starts runnig, it needs more than one hanky to be contained, so I always have to carry at least 2 of them.

Depois de pensar um bocadinho, lembrei-me de acrescentar um bolso de plástico. Peguei num saco de plástico transparente e cortei-lhe um dos cantos inferiores, da mesma largura da carteira. Coloquei-o de maneira a que a abertura lateral fosse cosida ao mesmo tempo que cosia o outro lado da carteira (dá para perceber melhor pelas fotos). Depois virei "para o lado certo" e  ficou pronto.

After a little brainstorming, I remembered to add a plastic pocket. I took a normal clear plastic bag and cut one of the bottom corners, with the same width of my wallet. I placed it so the lateral opening of the plastic would be sewn close at the same time as the lateral opening of the wallet (look at the pictures to get the idea).

I then turned the whole wallet rightiside out.

No final, preguei um botão de mola para fechar o porta-lenços... 

In the end, I attached one of those clip-buttons to close my hanky-carrier...

...e decorei um um lacinho do mesmo tecido.

...and I decorated it with a little bow made out of the same fabric.

Novo look // New look

Este fim de semana vou dar um make-over aqui ao blog... estou a seguir as dicas da Nina do Momma Go Round.... Vamos lá ver o que sai daqui :P

This weekend I will do a make-over on good ol' blog here.... I'm following the tips from Nina from Momma Go Round... Let's see what I'll make with it :P

 

Ainda não está como tinha idealizado, mas para isso preciso de mais treino com o Picasa... Mas gosto muito mais :D

It's not how I idealized it yet,  I need much more training with Picasa for that... But I like it much more :D

O que mudei : o layout em geral e cor de fundo, juntei um cabeçalho personalizado, juntei um "button" para levarem para os vossos cantinhos. Tirei a barra de navegação do google no cimo do blog e juntei uma assinuatura nas mensagens.

What I changed : the general layout and walpaper, I added a personalized header with photos from some of my projects, I added a grab button.I eliminated the blogger navigation bar at the top of the page and added a signature to my posts.


Isto não é nada difícil. A Nina explica muito bem o que é preciso fazer e se persistirem dúvidas, ela está lá para as tirar! :)
This isn't hard at all. Nina explains every step very well and if you still have any doubts, she's there for you! :)

O que ainda pretendo fazer : criar páginas específicas sobre algumas coisas (tem sido uma semana complicada e não tive imaginação para o fazer... :S )

What I still want to do : create a pages bar (it's been a very tough week and I haven't had my imagination up and running... :S )

Natal chez Sabi // Christmas chez Sabi

 

Estou muito orgulhosa do meu Natal DIY (FVM em português, mas gosto mais da versão inglesa). Só comprei a árvore de Natal e o papel de embrulho para fazer os enfeites, o resto aproveitei o que já tinha por casa e as decorações que vieram com a árvore de Natal (na qual, por acaso, tivemos 50% de desconto).

I am very proud of my DIY Christmas. I only bought the Christmas tree and de wrapping paper to make the decorations, for the rest I used stuff I already had and the decorations that came with the tree (on which, by the way, we had a 50% discount).

A maioria das coisas foram feitas numa noite de frustração por não ter a casa suficientemente decorada, pelo que não tirei fotos do processo, mas penso que seja fácil entender como foram feitas.

Most of the things were made on one night I was feeling very frustrated about the house not being decorated enough, so I didn't took any pictures of the process, but I think it's easy to understand  how I made each thing.

A coroa de natal dá as boas-vindas a quem entra ( papel pardo, que veio nas caixas do Ikea; fio verde; laços que vieram com a árvore de Natal )

The Christmas wreath welcomes us at the entrance door ( paper that came with the furniture boxes from Ikea; green thread; bows, which came with the Christmas tree)

 Na janela, cai a neve ( a grinalda veio com a árvore de natal; algodão em rama para os flocos redondos; papel cavalinho branco para os flocos mais elaborados - tirei a ideia daqui e daqui, mas fiz à minha maneira)

It "snows" by the window (the garland came with the Christmas tree; cotton to make the round snowflakes; thick white paper to make the elaborated snowflakes - I took the idea from here and here, but I did them my way). 

Na árvore não podiam faltar bolas vermelhas (vieram incluídas), mas o resto foi "caseirinho" (cartão e papel de embrulho para os enfeites 3-D; restos de plástico para forrar gavetas para os flocos) - ainda não está totalmente completa, pois faltam as luzes e algo para pôr em cima.

Red balls are a must-be on my Christmas tree (they were included), but the rest was homemade (cardoboard and wrapping paper for the 3-D decorations; leftover plastic used to line drawers for the snowflakes) - it's not fully decorated yet, the lights and something to put on the top are still missing.

Ainda há mais cantinhos para mostrar, mas fica para depois :)

There are still some other little corners to show, but that's for another time :)

Coroa de Advento // Advent Crown

Para mim, o Natal começa no 1º Advento, ou seja, o 1º dos 4 Domingos anteriores ao Natal. Esse é o dia de começar a fazer as bolachas de Natal, fazer a árvore de Natal, de decorar a casa... Infelizmente, este ano não houve tempo para fazer isso tudo, mas uma das coisas que não pode falhar é a coroa de advento.

A Coroa de Advento é um candelabro circular, que pode ser simples ou decorada, onde se põem 4 velas : em cada Domingo de Advento acende-se uma, até que, no último, as 4 estão acesas.

Christmas, for me, starts on the 1st Advent, that is, the first of the 4 Sundays before Christmas. That's the day when the cookies are made, the tree and the rest of the house is decorated... Unfortunately, this year there wasn't enough time to do all that, but one of the things that is a must-be is the Advent Crown.

The Advent Crown is circular candle holder, simple or decorated, where you put 4 candles : on each Advent Sunday you light one until, on the last one, all 4 are lit up.

Este ano tivemos de comprar a árvore, portanto não quis gastar dinheiro em mais decorações. Peguei então num prato que não usamos, e forrei-o com papel de alumínio. Depois peguei num guardanapo vermelho, fiz-lhe uns recortes, e pus por cima. Em vez de uma coroa, fiquei com um prato de Advento :) Não é a mesma coisa, mas assim tenho uma forma bonita para fazer a contagem decrescente para o Natal!

This year we had to buy the tree, so I didn't want to spend any more money on decorations. I took a plate that we don't use and wrapped it in aluminium foil. Then, I took a red paper napkin, made a few cut outs and put it on the centre of the plate. Instead of a Advent crown, I ended up with an Advent plate :) It's not the same thing, but it's a nice way to make the cuntdown until Christmas!

Doce de Uva : como esterilizar frascos // Grape jam : how to sterilise jars

Introduzindo este post, deixem-me dar crédito ao blog Os tostões cá de casa, que me inspirou para fazer este doce, que eu não consigo parar de comer à colherada.
Tinha um monte (literalmente) de uvas no frigorífico e já andava enjoada delas (e eu adoro uvas), não sabia o que lhes havia de fazer. Comecei a pensar se daria para fazer doce de uva, nunca tinha visto tal coisa, pensei que talvez não desse... Entro na Net para pesquisar a questão e eis se não que vejo um post naquele blog (que eu visito de regularmente) precisamente sobre doce de uva !! Acho estas coincidências fantásticas. A minha "sogra" até tem alguma razão quando fala da consciência colectiva :)

Introducing this post, let me just give credit to the blog Os tostões cá de casa, that inspired me to do this jam, which I can't bring myself to stop eating by the spoonful.
I had a mountains (literally) of grapes in the fridge e I was getting sick of them (and I love grapes), but I didn't know what to do with them. I started thinking if I could make grape jam, I had never seen such a thing, I thought maybe it wasn't doable... I got online to start my research on that and, to my surprise, the newest post on that blog (which I visit regularly) was precisely about grape jam !! I think these coincidences are amazing. My "mother-in-law" may have a point when she speaks about colective conscienceness :)

Isto dos doces, cada um tem a sua ratio. Eu uso a fórmula da minha avó - para cada kilo de fruta aos pedaços, 750gr de açúcar, 850gr se a fruta não for muito doce.Deixar fervinhar em lume brando.
Porém, a minha dúvida prendia-se com a esterilização. Em todo o lado havia receitas de doces, mas nenhuma dizia como esterilizar os frascos.

The thing about jams, is that everyone has their favourite ratio. I use my grandmother's formula : for each kilogram of diced fruit, 750gr of sugar, 850gr if the fruit isn't that sweet. Let it simmer in low heat.
However, my main question was about the sterilizing process. I saw recipes for jams everywhere, but none mentioned how to sterilize the jars.

Pesquisei um bocadinho e de várias dicas e truques retirei o seguinte : quem tiver microondas, use-o (bastam uns segundos na potência máxima). Quem não tiver, recorra à técnica da água a ferver.

I did some research and from the various tips and tricks, I got this ideia : whoever has a microwave, use it ( a few seconds in full power is enough). Who doesn't have one, use boiling water.

Em primeiro lugar, há-que lavar bem os frascos. Os meus já tinham sido lavados na máquina, mas mesmo assim dei-lhes outra ensaboadela. Entretanto, põe-se a água a ferver numa panela, onde os frascos caibam sem problemas.

First, wash the jars. Mine had been washed in the diswasher, but I still gave them another quick "bath". Meanwhile, start boiling the water in a pan, where the jars can fit nicely.



Quando a água ferver, deitar os frascos e as tampas na panela, com ajuda de uma colher. Deixá-los lá durante uns 10 minutos.


When the water starts to boil, use a spoon to lower the jars into the pan, aswell as the lids. Let them sit for about 10 minutes.



Novamente com ajuda da colher, retirar os frascos e as tampas - CUIDADO : está muito quente. Já estão prontos para receber o doce (que deve ser deitado quente), fechados com força e deixados virados ao contrário durante 24 horas.

Again with a spoon, fish the jars and lids out of the pan - CAREFUL : it's very hot. They're ready to be filled with the jam (still warm), closed tightly and left upside down to cool for 24 hours.




Por fim, estão prontos para levar com uma bela etiqueta, ou não, onde se mencione o tipo de doce e a data. Não é preciso imprimir nada, basta ter um pouco de imaginação. Eu dei uso à minha cartolina crua, que aproveitei do saco de papel do outro dia :)

At last, they're ready to be embelished, or not, with a pretty label, where is mentioned the type of jam and the date. You don't have to print out anything, just use your imagination. I used my piece of raw construction paper, which I took from the paper bag the other day :)
