Dia dos Namorados // St. Valetine's Day

Ontem foi assim :

Yesterday was like this :

O look : as minhas calças de pijama e as minhas botinhas-pantufa. Não me julguem, tinha boas razões para vestir :

1- tinha apanhado com muito frio e chuva à espera do autocarro

2- o meu namorado acha as minhas botas-pantufa sexy :P

The outfit : my pijama pants and my houseboots! Don't judge me right away, I had good reasons for this choice :

1- I came home very wet and cold from waiting for the bus

2- my boyfriend finds my houseboots sexy :P

O menu : sopinha, fondue de queijo e presunto. Nem nos lembrámos de sobremesa e ainda bem porque no final do jantar estávamos tremendamente cheios!

The menu : soup, cheese fondue and ham. We forgot about desert and I'm glad we did because by the end of it we were too full!

Eu não ligo muito ao Dia dos Namorados. Não vou dizer que é muito consumista, porque, na verdade, só é consumista se o fizermos isso dele. Mas nunca liguei... Também é verdade que 2 semanas antes do dia de S. Valentim faço anos, 3 semanas depois temos o nosso aniversário de namoro e 3 semanas depois disso faz anos o meu namorado, pelo que juntar mais um dia de prendas e jantar fora no dia 14 de Fevereiro era excessivo :P De qualquer maneira, gosto sempre de assinalar com alguma coisa pequenina... Este ano foi o ramo de rosas de papel vermelhas, feitas de guardanapos!

I don't care that much about Valentine's day. I'll not be saying that it's too consumist because the truth is that it only comes down to consumerism if we let it. I just never really cared about this holiday... It's also true that 2 weeks before V-day is my birthday, 3 weeks after V-day is our "anniversary" and 3 weeks after that is my boyfriends birthday, so adding another day of presents and eating out on the 14th Febraury would be a little too much :P Nevertheless, I like to remember the date with something small... This year I made this bouquet of red paper flowers out of napkins!

12 Meses // 12 Months

Não sou de resoluções de ano novo, mas para 2011 tomei uma decisão : todos os meses vou decorar alguma coisa. Assim, se algum dia me vir numa situação em que precise de saber alguma coisa específica(do género, estar no "Quem quer ser milionário", com a hipótese de ganhar 100 000 euros :P ), já não sou apanhada desprevenida. Além disso, é uma espécie de treino para o cérebro e quero ver se deixo de me esquecer das chaves e do guarda-chuva em todo o lado!

I am not a New year's resolutions kind of girl, but I made one decision regarding 2011 : every month I am going to memorize something. This way, if I ever find myself in a situation where I need to know a specific thing (eg. I am on "Who wants to be a millionaire" facing the million dollar question :P ), I won't be caught off guard. In addition, it's good exercise for the brain and I want to see if I stop forgetting my keys and umbrella everywhere!

Para me ajudar a manter esta "resolução", vou-me apoiar aqui no blog. No dia 1 de cada mês publico a lista daquilo que quero decorar nesse mês. Entretanto, todas as noites, antes de me deitar, leio/recito a lista, para a decorar. Vamos lá ver se funciona :D No último dia, escrevo de novo a lista, mas sem recorrer a cábulas (prometo).

To help me with this resolution, I am going to rely on this blog. On the 1st of every month, I will publish the list of things I want to memorize that month. Meanwhile, every night, before I fall asleep, I read/say out loud the list, in order to memorize it. Let's see if that works :D On the last day of each month, I will rewrite it from heart, without cheating ( I promise).

Ora bem, aquilo que me proponho a decorar em 2011 é o seguinte :

Well, the things I am going to memorize in 2011 are :

Janeiro - Os presidentes da República de Portugal ( já que vamos ter eleições e festejámos o centenário em 2010)

January - The names of the Presidents of the Republic of Portugal (since it is an election year and we celebrated our Republic's 100th birthday last year)

Fevereiro - todos os países europeus e respectivas capitais (esta é muito fácil, visto que só confundo as capitais dos países da ex-URSS, mas como o mês é mais curto, é justo :D )

February - every European country and their capital cities (this is a easy one, as I only get confused on the names of the capitals of the countries from the former URSS, but as it is a shorter month, it is only fair )

Março - todos os filmes do James Bond e respectivos actores

March - the names of all James Bond movies and actors

 

Abril - Os símbolos químicos dos elementos (não digo todos, mas pelo menos os mais conhecidos)

April - The chemical symbols of the elements ( I don't say all of them, but at least the most commonly known)

Maio - Nomes e cognomes dos reis de Portugal (esta também é facil, ainda me lembro de quase tudo da Primária)

May - Names and surnames of the kings of Portugal (this one is also easy, because I remmember almost everything from Elementary school)

Junho - Mares do Mundo, nomes e localização

June - The seas of the World and their locations

Julho - Estados e capitais de estado dos Estados Unidos da América

July - The States and state capitals of the United States of America

Agosto - As 7 maravilhas do mundo antigas e modernas, bem como a sua localização

August - The 7 wonders of the old and of the modern World, as well as their location

 Desenhar motivos natalícios no papel de embrulho e recortá-los.

Draw Christmas motivs on the wrapping paper and cut them out.

Colá-los desenhos na parte lisa do cartão (a que estava na parte de dentro)

Glue them on the card, on the side that was previously the inside of the box.

Plastificar a parte do cartão que tem o desenho.

Plastify the side that has the drawing glued on.

Recortar um rectângulo de papel branco do mesmo tamanho do cartão e colar na parte de trás (que antigamente era a parte de fora da caixa)

Cut a rectangle from the white paper the same size as the card and glue it on the backside (that previously was the outside of the cereal box)

Escrever uma bonita mensagem de Natal e enviar!

Write a nice Christmas message and send it!

Natal chez Sabi // Christmas chez Sabi

 

Estou muito orgulhosa do meu Natal DIY (FVM em português, mas gosto mais da versão inglesa). Só comprei a árvore de Natal e o papel de embrulho para fazer os enfeites, o resto aproveitei o que já tinha por casa e as decorações que vieram com a árvore de Natal (na qual, por acaso, tivemos 50% de desconto).

I am very proud of my DIY Christmas. I only bought the Christmas tree and de wrapping paper to make the decorations, for the rest I used stuff I already had and the decorations that came with the tree (on which, by the way, we had a 50% discount).

A maioria das coisas foram feitas numa noite de frustração por não ter a casa suficientemente decorada, pelo que não tirei fotos do processo, mas penso que seja fácil entender como foram feitas.

Most of the things were made on one night I was feeling very frustrated about the house not being decorated enough, so I didn't took any pictures of the process, but I think it's easy to understand  how I made each thing.

A coroa de natal dá as boas-vindas a quem entra ( papel pardo, que veio nas caixas do Ikea; fio verde; laços que vieram com a árvore de Natal )

The Christmas wreath welcomes us at the entrance door ( paper that came with the furniture boxes from Ikea; green thread; bows, which came with the Christmas tree)

 Na janela, cai a neve ( a grinalda veio com a árvore de natal; algodão em rama para os flocos redondos; papel cavalinho branco para os flocos mais elaborados - tirei a ideia daqui e daqui, mas fiz à minha maneira)

It "snows" by the window (the garland came with the Christmas tree; cotton to make the round snowflakes; thick white paper to make the elaborated snowflakes - I took the idea from here and here, but I did them my way). 

Na árvore não podiam faltar bolas vermelhas (vieram incluídas), mas o resto foi "caseirinho" (cartão e papel de embrulho para os enfeites 3-D; restos de plástico para forrar gavetas para os flocos) - ainda não está totalmente completa, pois faltam as luzes e algo para pôr em cima.

Red balls are a must-be on my Christmas tree (they were included), but the rest was homemade (cardoboard and wrapping paper for the 3-D decorations; leftover plastic used to line drawers for the snowflakes) - it's not fully decorated yet, the lights and something to put on the top are still missing.

Ainda há mais cantinhos para mostrar, mas fica para depois :)

There are still some other little corners to show, but that's for another time :)

Coroa de Advento // Advent Crown

Para mim, o Natal começa no 1º Advento, ou seja, o 1º dos 4 Domingos anteriores ao Natal. Esse é o dia de começar a fazer as bolachas de Natal, fazer a árvore de Natal, de decorar a casa... Infelizmente, este ano não houve tempo para fazer isso tudo, mas uma das coisas que não pode falhar é a coroa de advento.

A Coroa de Advento é um candelabro circular, que pode ser simples ou decorada, onde se põem 4 velas : em cada Domingo de Advento acende-se uma, até que, no último, as 4 estão acesas.

Christmas, for me, starts on the 1st Advent, that is, the first of the 4 Sundays before Christmas. That's the day when the cookies are made, the tree and the rest of the house is decorated... Unfortunately, this year there wasn't enough time to do all that, but one of the things that is a must-be is the Advent Crown.

The Advent Crown is circular candle holder, simple or decorated, where you put 4 candles : on each Advent Sunday you light one until, on the last one, all 4 are lit up.

Este ano tivemos de comprar a árvore, portanto não quis gastar dinheiro em mais decorações. Peguei então num prato que não usamos, e forrei-o com papel de alumínio. Depois peguei num guardanapo vermelho, fiz-lhe uns recortes, e pus por cima. Em vez de uma coroa, fiquei com um prato de Advento :) Não é a mesma coisa, mas assim tenho uma forma bonita para fazer a contagem decrescente para o Natal!

This year we had to buy the tree, so I didn't want to spend any more money on decorations. I took a plate that we don't use and wrapped it in aluminium foil. Then, I took a red paper napkin, made a few cut outs and put it on the centre of the plate. Instead of a Advent crown, I ended up with an Advent plate :) It's not the same thing, but it's a nice way to make the cuntdown until Christmas!

Enfeites para a árvore de Natal // Christmas tree decorations

Esta ideia não é originalmente minha - vi estas estrelas no site  "O Artesanato" e decidi que tinha de ter umas no estilo para decorar a minha árvore, não só porque são bonitas, mas também porque me permitia reutilizar as embalagens de papel que há cá por casa :) Só que eu não me quis ficar pelas estrelas, pelo que também fiz umas bolas e umas estrelas cadentes, baseadas no mesmo conceito.

This ideia isn't originally from me - I saw these stars on the site "O Artensanato" and decided that I just had to have some to decorate my Christmas tree, not only because they are very pretty, but also because it allowed me to repurpose the paper boxes that we have around the house :) But I didn't want only stars, so I also did some balls and some shooting stars, based on the same concept.

As imagens são bastante explícitas e o site dá uma explicação bastante boa, mas vou repetir aqui, rapidamente, como fiz.

The pictures are quite self-explanatory and the site gives a very good explanation of the process, but I'll repeat here, quickly, how I made mine.

Primeiro, desenhei as figuras que queria fazer em papel de rascunho e recortei-as. A estrela retirei do site "O Artesanato", a bola fiz a partir de um copo e a estrela cadente retirei daqui. Como eu não quis imprimir as imagens, usei um pequeno truque : encostar uma folha ao ecrã do computador e, muito ao de leve, traçar o desenho com um lápis. Depois, já sobre uma mesa, voltar a traçar o desenho, desta vez mais carregado e corrigindo leves impressões.

First, I drew the figures I wanted to make on the back of a used piece of paper and I cut them out. I copied the star from the "O Artesanato" website, for the circle I used a glass and the shooting star I copied from here. As I didn't want to print the pictures, I used a little trick : I placed the sheet of paper in front of the computer screen and traced the picture, very carefully and lightly, directly from it. Afterwards, I re-traced them, correcting any imperfections.

Com base nesses moldes, fazer as estrelas, bolas, etc... necessárias, usando cartolina ou, como eu fiz, embalagens de papel de cereais ou bolachas - não esquecer que, para cada enfeite, são precisas duas formas. Para as estrelas cadentes, eu só queria o efeito 3-D na cauda, portanto, para cada fazia pares de 1 estrela cadente completa e uma cauda.

Por sua vez, com base nesses moldes de cartolina, traçar e recortar o desenho correspondente em papel bonito - eu usei papel de embrulho natalício.

Using the cut-outs as guidelines, trace and cut out the figures on construction paper or, as I did it, on cereal boxes, cookie packages, etc... - don't forget that for each decoration you need two figures. For the shooting star, however, I only wanted the tail to be three-dimensional, so I used a complete shooting star and one tail bit. Next, using these construction paper figures, trace them on pretty paper and cut these last drawings out - I used wrapping paper.

De seguida, forram-se as formas de cartolina com esse papel. Se for necessário, recortar o excesso de papel com uma tesoura afiada.

Afterwards, glue the wrapping paper figures on to the construction paper figures. If necessary, cut the excess paper off, with a sharp scissor.

vermelho : cortar; verde : furar // red : cut ; green : hole

 Agora, temos de fazer o corte. Podem ver onde fiz os cortes na foto - estão assinalados a vermelho.

Now, we have to make the cut, using a sharp scissor. You can see where and how deep I did them on the picture - the cuts are marked in red.

Finalmente, encaixar cuidadosamente as duas formas uma na outra e fazer um furo na parte de cima, suficiente para passar um fio. Mais uma vez, os locais dos furos estão assinalados a verde. 

Finally, carefully assemble each decoration and make a little hole on the top, big enough to pass a piece of thread to hang them. Once again, the places where I made the holes are marked in green.

Eu sei que não estão perfeitos, mas fui eu que os fiz e estou imensamente orgulhosa deles. Gostei imenso do papel dos anjinhos (fazem-me lembrar uma decoração da Natal que havia em minha casa, quando era pequena) e, depois de montados, apercebi-me de mais uma coisa deliciosa - quando os enfeites rodopiam (o que é frequente quando estão penduradas), os anjinhos parece que estão todos malucos a voar de um lado para o outro e de cima para baixo :D 

I know they're not perfect, but I made them by myself and I am immensely proud of them. I really liked the angels  on the wrapping paper (they reminded me of a Christmas decoration we  had at home, when I was little) and, after I finished the decorations, I realized one other delighful detail - when the decorations are spinning (which often happens, when they're hanging), the angels seem to be flying one side to another and up and down, like crazy :D

Quando eu era pequena, por esta altura, pegávamos nas caixas de sapatos perdidas lá por casa, fazíamos máscaras assustadoras e saímos à rua para cantar os "Bolinhos e Bolinhós" - a tradição portuguesa para sacar uns docinhos ou moedinhas aos vizinhos. Já se faz há gerações na zona de Coimbra (não sei como é no resto do país, mas a maioria das pessoas com que falo e que não sejam de Coimbra, não conhecem esta nossa versão das "doçuras e travessuras")

When I was a little girl, around this time of the year, we started looking for empty shoeboxes laying around the house, made scary masks out of them and hit the streets to sing "Bolinhos e bolinhós" (I can't translate this, it would be something like "Cakes and Cakeys" ) - the portuguese tradition to get some free candy or money from your neighbours. It's done for generations, in the area of Coimbra (I don't know about the rest of the country, but all people that I tell about this, that aren't from Coimbra, never heard of this version of Trick-or-Treating)

O processo é muito simples : na noite de 31 de Outubro, bate-se às portas das casas e começa-se a cantar a música - 

The process is very simple : on the night of the 31st of October, you knock on people's doors and start singing the song -

Bolinhos e Bolinhós

para mim e para vós

para dar aos finados

que estão mortos, enterrados

Houve um ano em que chegámos a fazer 1000 escudos cada um (éramos um grupo de 4) e ainda comemos uma data de chocolates e bolachas :) Mas acho que hoje já não faria sucesso, pelo que tenho de arranjar outro forma de me divertir na véspera dos Finados.

One year we made 1000 escudos (about 5 euros) each ( we were a group of four) and, on top of that, we ate a lot of chocolates and cookies. But I don't think I could reach the same success nowadays, so I have to think up different ways to have fun on Halloween.

Este ano, para poupar, vamos ser muito pouco originais e ficar por casa a comer lasanha com roquefort por cima - experimentem, é óptimo-, ver filmes de terror - nomeadamente o Ju-on, um dos melhores filme de terror de sempre- e rir das nossas fotos zombificadas - que podem fazer aqui.

This year, to save some money, we are not going to be very original, and stay at home, eat some lasagna with roquefort cheese sprinkled on top - try it, it's great-, watch horror movies - mainly Ju-on, one of the best horror movies ever - and laugh at our zombiefied pictures, which you can do for yourself right here.
