Finally I had some free time to make some more potholders. Once again, I've used the old bath towel and tablecloth that I had saved.

The ideia of using terry cloth towels to make potholders came from my boyfriend's grandmother. She died the year we started dating, so I dind't meet her, but, in my mother-in-"law"s words, she would always repurspose every little thing. So, when the bathtowels were getting old, they went on to the sewing pile to be transformed into potholders. You can imagine the number of potholders my mother-in-"law" inherited. Some of them were ditched on to us, and, altough they are perfect for their function, they aren't the cutest thing around, so I decided to make some, adding a little more interest to them.

The materials are quite simple : one terry cloth towel, some other resistant fabric (I used an old, stained table cloth) and a template of whatever drawing you want on your potholder.

Primeiro cortam-se 2 quadrados de toalha turca, de 20cm por 20 cm.
First, cut out 2 20cmx20cm squares of terry clot

Then, cut another terry cloth square, this time 15x15cm. This square will be used to give the potholder some extra padding, otherwise you'd burn your fingers.
Also cut a piece of the other fabric you're using, that is about 1,5 cm bigger, all around, than the chosen drawing.
I've also used the existing hem on the tablecloth to cut a little strip, to make a loop to hang the potholder.

Place your template on top of one of the bigger squares, trace it and cut the drawing out.

Agora começam as costuras. Now the sewing may begin.

Place and pin the 15cm sqaure in the centre of the 20 cm square that is not cut out and sew it on. The side that has the little square sewed on will be the side the is facing inwards (the wrongside)

Place the fabric under the cut out of the other square and pin it on.

Sew all around the drawing, on the rightside of the potholder (the side that will be staying out). If you want to, cut the excess fabric on the back. At this stage I stitched an eye on to my fish, because I was concerned that otherwise we couldn't make out the back from the belly.

Now, you just have to sew the two squares together, with the rightsides facing eachother. Leave a little opening, to turn the potholder rightside out.

If you'like to add a little loop to hang your potholder, make a loop with a stripe of fabric or a piece of ribbon and place it on a corner, like you can see on the picture below (with the ends peeking out and the loop placed between the squares) and sew. Reinforce the stitching on the place by sewing back and forth a few times.

Turn the potholder rightside out, through the opening you've left. It may seem like an impossible mission, but a 5cm hole is enough to pull the hole thing through (maybe even smaller, but I dind't dare). Flat the corners out and close the opening by hand.

Keeping the nautical theme, I made another potholder, this time featuring a starfish!

It took me about 30 minutes each, with some accidents on the way, typical of a first time sewer, so, in the future, I hope I won't take that much time. And it is a great way to repurpose old terry cloth towels, save some money and protect the environment, without having to end up with some lame and boring potholders.
When I was little, September was the month to purchase all the school supplies for the year. Oh, how I loved the smell of new books and notebooks!

However, this year I took some time off of my two week vacation to get some supplies I needed for the office, so I could declutter my desk at work : I needed a mousepad, a pencil holder and somekind of box to keep clips and rubber bands (I do need some other stuff, but I'm still gathering the materials for that.)

This picture is from the materials I used for the "domestic" mousepad, because I didn't take pictures from the first one :( The picture is from Pumukel, a character from a kids show I used to watch growing up and that I thought went well with my brown computer and mouse.

For the mouse pad I used a booklet that was going to the recycle bin because it was totally outdated. As it was the right size and thickness for a mouse pad, I decided to give it a second chance. First, I lined it with regular A4 white paper and, for the last "layer" I used a sheet of paper where I had printed a picture. Afterwards I lined it entirely with sticky transparent paper. After trying the mouse on it and seeing that I worked 100%, I made another mousepad for "domestic" use - luckily I had another booklet that was going to be recycled, but if I didn't, I could've easily used a piece of thicker cardboard.

The cheese was chosen to go with the picture I used on the mousepad for the office

As the mouse I bought for the office is not wireless, on the contrary, it has a quite long wire, I also made a "wire-hider" with half a roll of toilet paper that I also lined with plane paper where I had printed a picture. The only difference was that I plastified the printed paper before I glued it on the toilet role, as that striked me as easier to do than to plastify a cilindrical tube.

For the other two items I did practically the same : I printed the images I wanted, plastified them and then glued them on to a peanut can and a tune can. I don't know if you recognize them, but the pencil holder is featuring a drawing by Esher and the can for the clips shows a painting by Monet.

All the paper I used was draft paper, that was only printed on one side of the sheet, which I bring home from the office, to save it from going to the trash can, so the only money I've spent was on the transparen sticky paper (which I already had in the house, anyway) and the ink from the printer. And looking at my new supplies, they're actually kind of cute. However, my biggest smile goes to the mousepad, because I never thought I could make on at home, specially for under 1 euro. And I tell you, it works perfectly for optical mouses ( mices? I don't know if the same rule applies to the hardware mouse....), wireless or not.

Tomorow I'll bring them to their new home and I hope they will brighten my work hours :D For those also returning from their vacation, I hope you have a nice "1st day of work"!

P.S. - looking at the photos, I noticed that not only do I nedd to stop forgetting to capture all the steps of the projects I make but I also have to find a better place than the floor to take my pictures... And a new camera for Christmas would also come in handy :P (I can't believe I said the C-word in August!!)
Está aí alguém? // Hello! anyone out there?Ui, tanto tanto tempo.... (.....vergonha....).

Uh, it's been soooooo long... (...shame on me...). I'm not going to list endless excuses, but it hasn't been easy around here : lots and lots of work and very little recognition, which makes me physically and mentally tired and without any inspiration to write, photogtaph or create anything. However, I will try to slowly return to the blogging work.

For those who hung in there, a thank you 1000 times and I'm very very sorry :S

One of the reasons that made my want to come back here is my new toy : my sewing machine. Although I've had it for some weeks now, I only tried it yesterday, when we finally organized our home office (which had been used as a storage for all the furniture that our landlady insisted on not having removed from our apartment) and I saved a little space for myself. I read the instructiona manual, out loud even, and here's my first "work of art" :

É apenas um trapo onde pratiquei os diversos pontos.... um trapo bastante velho :P // It's just a rag where I trained some stitches... a very old rag :P

Now seriously, after trying it and realizing that it's npt rocket science, I made a potholder. I used a ruined bath towel and a kitchen towel.

It's crooked, it's far from perfect and it's not the best looking thing in the world, but, as once my blogging friend Papgena said, I've learned from it, I love it and I am kind of proud of it (nevertheless, my potholder can't compare to her quilt!! ).

As it was my first time, I didn't make any tutorial, but I thinking about making some more potholders like this (we are in need of some), so I may take some pictures of the steps the next time :)

The accessory I use the most is the watch. I have a lot of them and always try to match them with my outfits. I've been "collecting" Swatch watches since I was 11 and all of them and I keep all of them, even if they don't work anymore, because I find them (the one I own) beautiful.

After I saw this idea on the blog "Aprender e Organizar" (Learn and Organize), I decided to do something like that to organize my collection.
I lined a box I had kept with fabric and, with the same fabric, lined 9 toilet paper roles. I measured the inside of the box and the roles, cut up the fabric and glued it on with some mod podge : it is so simple I didn't even took pictures of the process.

While putting the watches in their new home I realized almost everyone of them needed new batteries! I set them aside and now I'll take 2 ou 3 every month to the store to replace the batteries!
A minha senhoria veio finalmente buscar as coisas dela.
My landlady finally came to pick up her things. However, she only gave us a one day notice, so everything had to be packed in the study, so we could clean and empty all her furniture and make them ready for her to load them in the truck. Now, sowly, we are buying the things we need and trying to make this place our home!

Some days, for work reasons, I can enjoy my lunch in a townsquare that has a small park in the middle. The other day I had a few spare minutes, so I decided to take a walk and look at the different statues that are there and, to my surprise, one of them was dedicated to the god Baco, the god of wine (and other things) from Ancient Rome! I studied in a city where this god is dearly "worshipped", but I had to come here to see a true homage :P

One other thing I like about this park are the lamps : I love the look of old lamps, wrapped in plants, they look so romantic!

One other thing that surprised me this couple of weeks was the plant in my kitchen. Remember this post? I mentioned there that I didn't know what those green knobs at the end of the branches where... Well, the other day, when I came home, I found my answer : a beatiful white flower had bloomed, which fill the air with the sweet smell of Spring!

In March I was very busy... It was the last month before I had to hand in my final paper and there were lots of things to tweek and re-write. And I missed my little bloggy and thought many times about it…

I also thought a lot about giving a thorough clean to our big shelving unit in the office, which I love, because it was the first thing that we bought, together, to start decorating our nest J The truth is that the things are all neatly placed on the shelves, but in no order what so ever! And I really think that books belong with books, pencils with pencils and empty egg cartons and toilet paper rolls with empty plastic bottles and old newspapers (come one, don’t tell me that you don’t save these treasures)!

But this post isn’t about my shelving unit, it’s about my Blog… When I created it, right on the first post I mentioned the name “Thought Bubble” was related to the millions of ideas that came to mind as I was reading the many wonderful blogs out there. The ideas were so many that, if I was a comic book character, my head would be surrounded by thousands of thought bubbles! And therefore I started to write about what came to mind and that I thought could be useful to people who would read me. But the truth is it was never going as far as I wanted it too : I didn’t have a specific line of thought and I never went all the way, afraid that I might be focusing on only one theme or that my posts would end up being not interesting to readers that came here to read about one specific topic… :S

So, after careful and long consideration, I decided to take the same idea about my shelving unit and apply it to my blog. Right, I decided to split Thought Bubble into 3!

Everything craft and DIY related will remain here, on Thought Bubble. I do have a special affection for this space (there’s no blog like the first one) and that is why I want to dedicate it to this hobby that gives me some much satisfaction :)

The newly-born Us and the Cats will be a “try-and-error” blog, where I’ll post about the solutions and ideas I (but maybe I can’t really have all the credit for this) stumbled upon while trying to make our daily life easier and more… us.

Lastly, everything recipe related will be on “...at the end of the day”, becaus that is when I spend more time in the kitchen.

I don’t know if it will work, but I think that it is what suits me and my blogging side the best. Of course, I would love for all of you, followers and readers, to join me ont my other two blogs, but I won’t be mad if you don’t join them or even if you leave this one and only read one of the others. It would only make me sad if you stopped reading all together :P

And before I end this ridiculously long post, let me just say that the design of the new blogs was only achieved with the help of the "Beautify your Blog" series that Nina hosted a few months ago and that made it so much easier for noobs (you can tell my BF is a gamer, right:P ) like me to personalize your little corners :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Little story : as you may know, catholics had the habit of not eating meat on fridays. Today, that costum isn't followed by many, except on Good Friday, or only during Lent. As they weren't allowed to eat meat, many portuguese ate fish instead, and the problem was solved. That's all fair and good... until you arrive at a country were the fish isn't plenty and, therefore, very expensive.... What are catholics supposed to do in a country like that?
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A Suiça é um desses países.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Switzerland is one of those countries. So instead of eating meat, there was created a habit in catholic homes on Fridays.... eating savory and sweet pies (!!) - that way, everyone, on Earth and in heaven, would be pleased. Of course, as with anything good, this habit spread to protestant homes asweell, so a sort of tradition started in swiss homes : eating pies on Fridays. In fact, many backers fully stock their shops with pies on that day and having a fruit pie for Friday's desert is something that is still mandatory for a lot of people.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have a swiss background so I grew up hearing the stories that my mum told about Friday being their favourite day of the week, not only because it was the beginning of the weekend, but also because it was <strike>sweet</strike> pie day. I honestly don't remember if we did it on Fridays, but I can tell you that many dinners in our household consisted of "only" two savory and two sweet pies and a soup (the portuguese habits also played their role). We didn't do it for religious reasons, so there was no mandatory meat restriction, and, sometimes, instead of a savory pie, there was a simple but delicious pizza-pie on the table. And this is the recipe I want to share today, because I never had pizza like that anywhere but at my parent's and, now, in my home!
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Para uma pizza é preciso :
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> meia cebola grande, cortada às rodelas fininhas
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> 3 tomates médios, cortados às rodelas fininhas
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> 10 fatias finas de fiambre esfarrapadas
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> queijo mozzarella, queijo emmental, natas e pimenta q.b.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Pré-aquecer o forno a 200º.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">When I am waiting for someone or something - in this case, the bus - I always look around to see if I find anything to distract myself with. I hate to wait (which contradicts mu natural constant lateness) and this time I did that by looking at the floor : I saw a lot of cigarette butts, some lollipop sticks and even an applecore. Then, suddenly, in the midst of the ugly pavemente stones, Hello Kitty was playing peek-a-boo.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The photo is kind of blurry, but the first one were way worse. With this picture I learned a simple but valuable lesson, that may be logic, but that had never crossed my mind : when photographing something small, it's best to get closer with the camera than to zoom-in. Next time I'll do better!
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">E assim atingi um dos meus objectivos com este projecto : aprender pequenos truques que me façam tirar fotografias melhores :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">And this way I reached one of the goals of this project : learn little tricks that make me take better pictures :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I must have looked ridiculous squatting down in the rain, pointing my camera and taking photos of the pavemente stones... But at least I provided a little distraction of my own to the other waiting passengers.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">4 fillets of any kind of white fish
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"> 1 Tomato
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">2 garlic cloves
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Olive oil
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Salt and Pepper
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Flour
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Half a glass of Water (1 dl)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">3 or 4 fresh basil leaves
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Aquecer o azeite numa panela.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Heat the olive oil in a pan. Meanwhile, slice the garlic and mix the flour with the salt and pepper. Put the garlic in the pan and let the oil pick up a little of the flavour, while you coat the fish with the seasoned flour. Put the fish into the pan and let it fry for a few minutes on each side, until golden brown. Use the waiting time to dice the tomato (I rarely peel tomatos, I just wash them very well before using them). Take the fillets out of the pan and set them aside.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In the same pan, put the tomato and let it cook until it's completely mooshed, then add the water. By now, you can add a bit more salt and pepper, if the sauce is too bland for your taste, but I didn't have to. Put the fish back into the pan, add the basil leaves. Cover the pan and let it cook slowly for a couple more minutes, on low temperature, to allow the flavours to blend.
<i style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Serve with pasta - I used maccaroni and broccoli, seasoned with butter.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Well, good people, this month has been kind of poor in the matters of crafting, decorating and such... I do have a lot of pictures on my camera, but they're all regarding recipes, which I don't publish because I didn't want my blog to turn to an exclusively cooking-blog... But I also don't want to stop posting, so I decided to reach a middle term and call March the Kitchen month.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Lately, the only DIY'ing I've been doing is dinner (breakfast and lunch that I take to the office aren't my chores), which has also been my creative fix of the day. I always have two things in mind : flavour and saving - how to make good tasting things, while not spending that much. Because, yeah, this gal here isn't a picky eater in terms of ingredients, I'll eat just about anything, but I'm very picky about flavour : if it's not tasty I'll barely touch it.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I hope I don't drive anyone away, but for those who aren't interested, you can come back in April, when I'll return to my usual schedule :P

Here in Portugal, most restaurants feature a desert called "House desert" that is really the same in every one of them . It's like a triffle : one layer of crushed cookies, one layer of a cream and eggwhites mixture and one layer of custard. But the first time I had "House desert" it was in a restaurant that made it a little bit different and I never had it again after I stopped going to that place. But it was so good, it always remained in my memory!

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">No outro dia decidi reproduzir cá em casa.

The other day I tried to make it at home. It's so simple I can't imagine why I never made it before. It turned out almost the same as in the restaurant, but now I know that the next time around I only have to put one table spoon of powedered chocolate :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Bater quatro claras em castelo.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Beat 4 eggwhites until they're stiff. Gently fold in one can of condensed milk, half a package of crushed Mary cookies* and one table spoon of powdered chocolate. Pour it into bowls and leave them in the fridge for a few hours. Serve with an expresso :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">* I've recently found out that maria cookies were sold all over the world, but sometimes they're called differently. They're those very dry, sweet cookies. They're called Mary Cookies because they were first made for an English Princess or a Queen named Mary.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">One little tip : when a recipe calls for crushed cookies I always use a carrot grater to grate them. But my grater got lost in the move so I decided to try and use my little grating machine (it's called Saladino, from Ariette)... I broke the cookies in the middle and put 6 or 8 of the halves in the opening and it grated them perfectly :) I'll do it this way from now on, it saves time and my patience!
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This was a very easy project I made in 15 minutes. I took an empty mason jar I had in the pantry and "painted" the outside with white glue (I think americans call it mod podge). I left it to dry over night.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The next day it already was keeping company to my Valentine's roses, with a candle flickering inside :)
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have a confession to make... my house is a huge mess and in the midst of the piles of things is my camera... :S So, I couldn't take a photograph for this project this week. But as there is no shortage of pictures on my hard drive, I decided to share a photo I took a while ago and, with it, let you know about a curious feature of mine :P
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is a slice of "chourição" (a portuguese type of sausage). I had to take its picture because I think it is heartshaped.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Eu adoro a forma de coração.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I love the shape of hearts. Since I was a kid, I always liked drawing hearts everywhere (but no, I never used hearts to dot my "ii's") and I totally freak out when I discover the shape of a heart on something random! One of the most impressive I found was a rust stain on a metal bridge : I was so sad I didn't have my camera on me at the time. Of course, where I see hearts, other might see miss-shaped circles or an undefined shape, so I guess I'm just a hopeless romantic.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I don't care that much about Valentine's day. I'll not be saying that it's too consumist because the truth is that it only comes down to consumerism if we let it. I just never really cared about this holiday... It's also true that 2 weeks before V-day is my birthday, 3 weeks after V-day is our "anniversary" and 3 weeks after that is my boyfriends birthday, so adding another day of presents and eating out on the 14th Febraury would be a little too much :P Nevertheless, I like to remember the date with something small... This year I made this bouquet of red paper flowers out of napkins!

One day the "Blog and similar Protective Services" will be called to take away my "Thought Bubble" because I don't give it enough<strike> food</strike> posts. I've had a hard week at work and at home, with lots of things to do and even more planned for the weekend. But there are two things that I cant postpone - the 12 Months Project and the Project 52.

Well, you can read more about Project 12 Months here. January was the time to learn the name of our Presidents.
Cavaco Silva
(e não, não tenho nenhum nome novo a acrescentar)
(and no, I don't have a new one to add to the list)

I've learned many curiosities about our Presidents : most of them were from the millitary or they studied Law. However, two of them were mathematicians and another was a doctor. We also had a monarchy-supporter President and a brasilian born President. For more information check out the Presidency's website (it has an English version, so don't worry)

For February the challenge is to learn the names of all the countries and capital cities of Europe.

Now, for Project 52, I must confess I'm using photo I took last week. This week I dind't have the time nor the inspiration to snap a few shots, but I think this one turned out so good that I had to post it eventually... Once again, my model is Tinota.
